Throughout the building the aim has been to create an environment that is reassuring and non-threatening. This has been achieved through understandable layout, familiar materials, avoidance of dark corners or dead ends and good observation links between staff and patients.
The clinic is ‘a thoughtfully considered, structured and secure environment’. The main crescent shaped block forms the main entrance , administration and assessment/treatment facilities. Each of the three wards, radiating out from the crescent in cruciform layouts, is segregated to ensure the security of both patients and staff. This layout also maximises the patients access to ‘fresh air’, secure outside spaces and daylight.
The scheme was developed in collaboration with with the Trust’s arts co-ordinator to integrate artwork throughout the building, both internally and externally. The Shannon Clinic was runner up in the UK National Better Healthcare Awards 2006.
