This 60 metre long cycle and footbridge spans over a major highway located at the Ballymascanlon Junction, north of Dundalk. Working closely with specialist bridge fabricator we designed and detailed the bridge in compliance with national roads authority technical standards.
The bridge comprises twin lattice girders forming the sides with braced top and bottom chords. The central 40m clear span bridges both north and south carriageways of the motorway. Bearings on the concrete piers either side of the hard shoulders and on the abutments allow both sliding and rotational movement of the bridge, whilst still providing restraint against uplift at the abutments.
The bridge was commissioned as part of the A1/N1 link road contract, extending the M1 motorway and high quality dual carriageway to Newry in Co. Down. It was erected over the course of one day, before this section of the motorway was opened.
