Bagenal’s Castle

Rediscovered in 1996, Bagenal’s Castle survived being enveloped within the premises of the former McCann’s Bakery on Abbey Way, Newry.

The rediscovery was an exciting opportunity to preserve and restore one of the most important aspects of local heritage and a building which is of intense historical interest, not least because it is the only known surviving castle in Ireland for which the original plans and elevations survive in the Public Records Office in London.

Conservation works to the remaining historic fabric were undertaken and a new structure was sensitively inserted into the original castle. Additionally, refurbishment of an adjacent 19th century warehouse was undertaken to accommodate a new museum.
