St. Mary’s Lavey Parish Church

Albert Fry Associates are pleased to be providing civil and structural engineering consultancy services for the re-ordering, adaption and refurbishment of their church premises at Lavey Parish in the Diocese of Derry.

The works represent a significant investment on behalf of the Diocese, and in particular the parishioners, to both preserve and enhance the character of the original premises whilst refurbishing it’s general fabric and mechanical and electrical services.

From a structural perspective externally, an extension was added wrapping around the north and west elevations with a new clear-span balcony being added internally. A tall eloquent lead-clad ‘fleche’ or spire centrally disposed over the junction of the nave and and the transepts. This posed a particular challenge in providing support to the new element without disturbance to the internal envelope nor the visual structural rhythm of the nave.
