Castle at Snodhill

Initial stabilisation of the standing stone ruins of this 11th century Norman frontier castle, a Grade II listed building and Scheduled Monument, was followed by consolidation and strengthening conservation works.

The stonework, which is partially 14th or 15th century re-fortification, had been neglected for over 350 years.

The immediate concern at commencement was to prevent collapse of precarious stonework. Careful insertion of timber raking shores, props on temporary footings, all fully reversible, removed the immediate risk.

All support and consolidation measures were detailed with due regard to the difficulty of accessing the castle, located on a protected, steep motte which surmounted a naturally steep hill. All materials were effectively transported by hand. Gravity grouting, ‘Cintec’ stainless steel masonry ties, repointing and natural turf capping were adopted to conserve the standing stonework.
