NWRC was established on 1st August 2007, bringing together Limavady College and North West Institute to create a larger, stronger area-based college to provide the highest quality of education and training to all the people of the North West of Ireland. NWRC has campuses in Limavady, Derry/Londonderry and Strabane, and each year supports over 28,000 students in achieving their personal educational goals.
Reflecting their commitment to the provision of first-rate study facilities to its students, NWRC continued to improve its resources including a £31.6M investment package. This included the construction of two new buildings at Strand Road. The site comprises two parcels of land located either side of the Strand Road. The plot on the west, to the front of the existing Lawrence Building, extends to 1980m² and is to receive a five storey extension. The plot to the east runs along the whole length of Boating Club Lane and extends to approximately 1700m². This building contains a mixture of publicly accessible spaces and student, teaching and social areas. A link bridge connects both buildings at level 3 and is a landmark feature of the development.
The scheme was delivered as a design and build contract with Albert Fry Associates providing full civil and structural engineering consultancy services to Tracey Brothers.
The scheme won a bronze Considerate Constructors Scheme 2011 National Site Award and is a finalist in the CEF Construction Excellence Awards 2011 in the Education Infrastructure and Sustainability Category.
