Holy Evangelist Primary School, Belfast

AFA contributed to the “design, development and construction” of Holy Evangelists’ Primary School at Glasvey Drive, Dunmurry, Belfast comprising a two-storey steel framed 21 class-base primary school being constructed on the site of the existing school premises with two multi-purpose halls, a nature suite, separate dining hall, school meals kitchen and stores. The project scope further includes a double nursery unit with school meals servery. Siteworks included additional carparking, a MUGA sports pitch and grassed play.

The scheme was awarded to Woodvale Construction under the NEC Engineering and Construction Contract: Option A using a two-stage approach, the first for the completion of the scheme’s detailed design and the second being the construction stage.

The works were delivered in two phases over two years so as to cause least disruption to school activities and curriculum delivery:

  • Phase 01: Construction of new 21 class primary school on the footprint of existing grass play and hardstanding areas with associated siteworks and pupil-decant to this new school from the original school premises.
  • Phase 02: Demolition of the original school building and completion of additional carparking with floodlit MUGA pitch and grass play.

Siteworks included pedestrian and vehicular access, car parking, site-wide attenuated drainage, street lighting etc. Ground conditions dictated the need for a mixture of piled and ground bearing sub-structure solutions.

A BREEAM rating of “Excellent” was achieved.
