Recycling Centre

The recycling centre associated with the Waste Transfer Station in Bangor is a model of sustainable design.

A sustainability rating of ‘Excellent’ was achieved through adoption of the following features:

  • use of recycled blast furnace slag
  • use of a fully recyclable steel superstructure
  • use of fibre-reinforced cement boards with high recycled content
  • harvesting of rainwater from roof drainage
  • use of sustainable (SUDS) drainage

The scheme received a number of awards including ‘Sustainable Building Project of the Year’ at the Sustainable Ireland Awards 2007.
