St Patrick’s Primary School, Belfast

AFA contributed to the “design and construction” of St Patrick’s Primary School, Pimm St, Belfast comprising a new 21 class-base primary school constructed on two adjacent sites separated by Churchill Street. The new three storey split level steel framed building is situated on the existing Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Primary School site on Pimm Street with additional carparking, a 3G sports pitch and grassed play being constructed on the Star of the Sea Primary School site on Churchill Street.

The scheme was awarded to Woodvale Construction under the NEC Engineering and Construction Contract: Option A using a two-stage approach, the first for the completion of the scheme’s detailed design and the second being the construction stage.

The works were delivered in three phases over two years so as to cause least disruption to school activities and curriculum delivery:

  • Phase 01: Decant of Edmund Rice PS to 14 new temporary modular classrooms on the Star of the Sea site and demolition of the Edmund Rice school building at Pimm St.
  • Phase 02: Construction of new 21 class primary school on the Edmund Rice site with associated siteworks and pupil-decant to this new school.
  • Phase 03: Demolition of the Star of the Sea school building and completion of additional carparking with 3G and grass pitches

Existing site topography dictated the need for an extensive earthworks exercise and siteworks include pedestrian and vehicular access, car parking, site-wide attenuated drainage, street lighting etc.

A BREEAM rating of “Excellent” was achieved.
